ð About the OSTA Score
The Osteoporosis Self-assessment Tool for Asians (OSTA) is a simple, validated tool to assess osteoporosis risk in postmenopausal women. While originally developed for Asian populations, it has shown usefulness in other ethnic groups as well.
How the OSTA Score is calculated
The OSTA score is calculated using the formula:
OSTA Score = (Weight in kg - Age in years) × 0.2
The result is then rounded to the nearest whole number.
Risk Categories
- Low Risk (OSTA > -1): Unlikely to have osteoporosis
- Medium Risk (OSTA -1 to -4): Moderate chance of osteoporosis
- High Risk (OSTA < -4): High chance of osteoporosis
Examples
Example 1: Low Risk
Age: 60 years
Weight: 65 kg
Calculation: (65 - 60) × 0.2 = 1.0 → OSTA Score = 1
Interpretation: Low risk of osteoporosis
Example 2: Medium Risk
Age: 70 years
Weight: 58 kg
Calculation: (58 - 70) × 0.2 = -2.4 → OSTA Score = -2
Interpretation: Medium risk of osteoporosis
Example 3: High Risk
Age: 75 years
Weight: 45 kg
Calculation: (45 - 75) × 0.2 = -6.0 → OSTA Score = -6
Interpretation: High risk of osteoporosis
Important Notes
- This tool is specifically for postmenopausal women.
- The OSTA score is a screening tool, not a diagnostic test.
- Those with medium or high risk should consult a healthcare provider for possible bone density testing (DEXA scan).
- Other risk factors (family history, medications, etc.) should also be considered.
